Golden hour in Cape Town: planning a portrait or couple shoot

In Cape Town the best light for outdoor portraits is usually the hour before sunset: roughly 19:00 to 20:00 in midsummer and 16:45 to 17:45 in midwinter. Plan around the summer south-easter, choose a location that suits your style, and book a directed session from R2,800 an hour.
Why golden hour
In the hour before sunset the sun is low and warm. Shadows soften, skin glows and backlight catches hair and fabric. It is the light behind most R2F portrait and couple sessions, including Besties at Golden Hour and the couple portraits in A Union in the Vineyards.
When it happens in Cape Town
- Midsummer (December–January): sunset is close to 20:00, so the best light runs from about 19:00.
- Midwinter (June–July): sunset is around 17:45, so plan to start at about 16:45.
- Spring and autumn fall in between. Your exact start time is set when the session is booked.
Plan around the wind
Summer brings the south-easter, a strong wind that is often at its worst in the afternoon. It is great for movement in hair and dresses and hard on everything else. Have a sheltered alternative, keep a calm day in hand where you can, and choose outfits that look good in a breeze.

Permits
Personal portrait sessions in most public places need no paperwork, but commercial shoots in some public spaces and national parks can require a film permit. R2F will tell you if your location needs one.
Price
Portrait and couple sessions are booked at the hourly rate, from R2,800 including editing and retouching. Most sessions last one to two hours.
